Surfing

Honolulu is known for Hawaii's great south shore waves. Packed and very competitive, it’s virtually reserved for locals who know how to surf inside the bowl. The bowl is just that—an inside-out section halfway in that forms between the Ala Moana boating channel and the Pacific Ocean. It holds waves of 4 to 12 feet. The takeoff is steep and fast; getting caught behind is a risk. The wave goes to the bowl exceedingly fast. The best board to use is shortboard.

People think surfing is difficult to learn. Well, it is, especially on the big waves of Honolulu and Waikiki (neighboring city of Honolulu but it is within the country of Honolulu). Though it is a bit competitive to surf out in these waves, it is not going to be a pain in the butt to learn how to. If you are a bit curious about surfing, there are many resorts in Honolulu and Waikiki where they offer basic training for surfer starters.

The lifeguards are always alert so there is no need to fear being out there in the water. Also, you will always have somebody beside you to paddle out there to the big waves and to ride along side by side as the waves carry you back ashore.
